Saw “Gatsby” this evening.

It’s going to take me a while to process, because it did have a lot to live up to in my books.

But I did genuinely enjoy it, and though I didn’t love every second of it, I’ll admit that Luhrmann did a pretty fantastic job adapting one of the most subtextual and contemplative novels of the last century.  Yes, there were a few times when I absolutely disagreed with what he did artistically, but so what? It’s not an excellent book-to-film adaptation, so if you’re going to see it and you know/enjoy/worship the novel, don’t go in expecting it to reflect the Fitzgerald’s profundity and thematic elegance, because it doesn’t - it couldn’t.  But as a film, it stands on its own rather excellently.

And the costumes, my word.  But then, Catherine Martin never disappoints <3
